The living legend of the Azerbaijani ethno-scene. More than 30 years of creativity, hundreds of concerts, and countless tours around the world, where they are always warmly welcomed. Especially in Russia, where «Cengi Etno Caz» is always awaited with special excitement.
Their hallmark is jazz-mugham - a unique synthesis of Azerbaijani folklore and jazz improvisation. The artists themselves explain this combination simply: «Both jazz and mugham are free music. Both involve improvisation, which makes it possible to harmoniously combine these genres.» The traditional instruments such as the tar, the oud and the percussion instruments reveal themselves in a way you haven't heard them before in the hands of virtuosos.
The band was founded in 1992 by the legendary jazz musician Rafig Babayev. Since 2002, it has been led by Mirjavad Jafarov, People's Artist of Azerbaijan, virtuoso tar and oud performer, participant and laureate of numerous international jazz festivals.
The ensemble has represented Azerbaijan at prestigious international venues from the USA and Norway to France and Turkey, has performed at the International Jazz Day in Paris, instituted by UNESCO, as well as on the stages of the Moscow International House of Music and the «Zaryadye» Concert Hall.
Cengi Etno Caz creates a space of absolute freedom at their concerts, where Azerbaijani mugham and Afro-jazz rhythms merge into a single and pulsating flow, proving that true improvisation knows neither national nor temporal boundaries.
